PETERLEE PUMAS 28 JARROW VIKINGS 36

E-mail Print PDF

Pics and match report to follow, but gave em too much of a head start in the first half as we couldnt seem to get going, 6 tries each at the end of the game and a perfectly good try disallowed on Scott Jordan under the posts and its maybe a different story.  Thanks to all the players and volunteers again this season, little Peterlee stood up and put some of the best rugby in consistantly over the season.  14 out of 14 in the league and league tables dont lie.  Just a big up, 9 of the starting line up yesterday were either 17, 18 or 19, puts the whole season in context for me.  Big ups also to mossy who played the whole game  with a broken ankle, adam with that wrist, Martin who was concussed early on and carl oliver who had that dislocated shoulder not so long ago and was playing his firts game back, not to mention clarkys ankles.  Well done all, See you all at training on Wednesdady and the end of season do on the 28th.

PETERLEE PUMAS 30 JARROW VIKINGS 10

E-mail Print PDF

Peterlee Pumas overcame a tough Jarrow Vikings team to go fourteen games undefeated although it did take 30 minutes for the first points to be scored.  Both teams understood the importance of this game as the two sides play again next week in the leagues grand final and neither Pumas or Vikings wished to concede first.  However, Jarrow got the unwanted privilege when Peterlee received a penalty which Andrew Rollins drove in.  A quick shift to the right wing found fullback Scott Jordan who dove over in the corner.  Pall Moss missed the following conversion from a difficult angle.  Jarrow received a penalty from the referee and they elected to kick.  John Coutts hit the post and the ball bounced back into the field of play but Jarrow could not follow up as the half time score stood at 4 – 0.

Jarrow kept the pressure they had going into the end of the first half by scoring a quick try in the first few minutes of the second.  Andy Gray dove over just right of the posts and John Coutts converted for Jarrow to take the lead.  In what was arguably the try of the game fullback Scott Jordan showed the crowd his amazing footwork, speed and strength to run in a try from his own 20 metre line.  He weaved through six Jarrow players to touchdown on the right hand side.  Moss converted  as Peterlee regained to advantage.  Another penalty for Peterlee found Stuart Houghton go over the line despite having two defenders trying to stop him.  Luke Watson, who is currently captain for the amateur England side, scored for Peterlee next in a bizarre fashion.  Watson tried to chip kick the Jarrow defence but it was charged down.  He reacted first by collecting the ball and slipping through a confused defence to score. Moss kicked the extra two points.  Mark Watson, older brother of Luke, drove a ball in next and was tackled inches short of the try line.  However, a quick play of the ball while Jarrow were still trying to organise their defence was pushed out to wing James Daniels to go over in the corner.  The angle was too acute for Moss to convert.  Jarrow came back at Peterlee and scored through Ian Arkley as Peterlee tried in vain to keep the away team off their try line.  The conversion was missed.  A great set play from Peterlee set up the next and final try as kicker Paul Moss got the ball from a scrum.  An accurate kick into the Jarrow try zone let fullback Scott Jordan run onto it to touch the ball down and score his hat trick.  Moss converted with the final kick to make the full time score 30 - 10.

England RL to play Cumbria in memorial match
England RL to play Cumbria in memorial match

England Rugby League are to play a commemorative match against a Cumbria representative team to raise funds for the family of Garry Purdham.
The 31-year-old former Whitehaven, Workington Town and Egremont player was one of 12 people killed by gunman Derrick Bird in Cumbria earlier this month, a tragedy which will have lifelong consequences for his wife Ros and their two young children, Flynn and Cameron.
To help the Purdhams, England will play a select team of professional and community players from the county at Whitehaven’s Recreation Ground on Sunday October 3.
The match takes place the day after the Engage Super League Grand Final and will comprise members of the England squad who are preparing to fly out for New Zealand and Australia three days later to compete in the 2010 Four Nations.
“The events of a fortnight ago were a tragedy of incomprehensible proportions which afflicted a region where Rugby League is an intrinsic part of the community,” said RFL Chief Executive Nigel Wood.
“Few of us can imagine what the Purdham family have gone through since they lost Garry but everyone within Rugby League wants to do the right thing by them and this game will achieve just that.
“As soon as the idea was suggested to Steve McNamara he was all for it. I am sure his reaction is going to be reflected in massive interest in this game, both in Cumbria and across the country.”
Although players involved in the Grand Final will not be available for selection, England coach Steve McNamara’s team will be the strongest line-up seen in Cumbria for generations.
A 24-man England squad is scheduled to fly to Auckland on Wednesday June and McNamara believes all the players who miss out on an Engage Super League Grand Final appearance will be hoping to board the plane with bumps and bruises from The Recreation Ground.
“All the Super League players knew of Garry from playing with or against his brother Rob, the Harlequins RL captain, and I’m sure they will want to put on a good show on October 3,” said McNamara.
“As well as helping raise a lot of money for the family, the match will be a useful exercise in our preparations for the Four Nations.
“Hopefully as many people as possible will get behind this match: I can’t think of a more worthy cause.”
Further details of selection plans, coaching arrangements and other logistical aspects of the game will be finalised in the coming months following consultation between the RFL and an organising committee comprising the clubs Garry Purdham played for and the Purdham family.
