North East Volunteers are Magic

Volunteers in the North East Recognised for their hard work

In order to acknowledge the hard work and support that people provide - unpaid - to the sport of Rugby League, the RFL annually recognise and reward their efforts through the Volunteer Award Scheme.

The Awards included 'Volunteer of the Year', 'Young Volunteer of the Year', 'Volunteer Coordinator of the Year' and 'Coach of the Year'. There is also a National Award for 'Unsung Hero  - a person who has made an outstanding contribution to Rugby League over sustained period of time.'

The process involves Regional winners who are then forwarded to the National Awards where all winners (plus a guest) will be treated to a VIP day out at the 2010 Carnegie Challenge Cup Final.

The North East nominations have now been received and the winners selected. All nominees and winners received two weekend passes to Murrayfield Magic for 1st and 2nd May.

In addition the winners will attend pre-match hospitality at the Hilton Hotel, Gateshead and be presented with their awards at the Gateshead Thunder v Swinton Lions game on Sunday 6th June.

A huge Congratulations is extended to all nominations who this year included;

Peterlee Pumas attend Murrayfield Magic

Magic Weekend is arguably the best round of the Super League’s regular season when every team and their followers make their way to one neutral ground and as last year Peterlee Pumas attended the event on the first day.

Twenty plus Pumas made the three and a half hour journey up to Edinburgh to watch eight of the fourteen Super League teams face off against each other in at Murrayfield.

A great day was had by all even though the day’s weather was much chillier than the previous years.

The Pumas had a chance to not only watch some of their sporting heroes on the field of play but also watch them at much closer quarters on the training pitch prior to the kick off of each game.

The Engage Super League fan zone also provided plenty of entertainment and fun to the Pumas who ventured into it.  Rugby League related side shows like inflatable bungee try scoring, pass targets and tackle bag smashing were there to be enjoyed.

A couple of the younger Pumas even managed to get a photograph with current Leigh Centurions player and The Super League Show regular Robbie Paul.

Special mention must go to nine year old Declan Taylor who managed an arduous but fun task of meeting every single Super League club mascot on the day.

PETERLEE PUMAS UNDER 15S AWAY TO WALLSEND

E-mail Print PDF

A fine day saw both teams have to aclimatise to the heat which saw a water break called half way through the first half.

Peterlee got things going straight away with a good move that put loose forward Alex Ruff in for the first try in the 1st minute.  3 minutes later the pumas attacked again and shifted the ball wide to Put wing James cronin in the corner, Joe Wyman converted.  Pumas man of the match George manser playing in the centers this week crossed on the 8th minute with Wyman adding the extras.  Scrum half Jack adamson got rewared for another fine performance with one of his many jinking runs that caused confusion in the defence a short while later as he took the ball from the srum.  Hookder Stephen Molyneaux crossed after 18 minutes and Wyman added 2 more points and the pumas started to ring the changes in the line up.  Wallsend struck back with a well worked try taking advantage of loose defence at the ruck  but Fullback Jamie Keen hit straight back in the final minute of the half with Wyman adding the extras to make it 32-4 to the Visiting Pumas.

Wallsend Started the second half the better with a well worked try out wide in the 35th minute but center Danny Wilson hit back again for the Pumas with a long run in and Jack Adamson took over the kicking duties to add the 2.  Wallsend got another try which was converted but the Pumas hit back with Alex Ruffs 2nd and George manswer also got his brace which Wyman now back on converted.

Final Score Wallsend Eagles 14 Peterlee Pumas 48.

England RL to play Cumbria in memorial match
England RL to play Cumbria in memorial match

England Rugby League are to play a commemorative match against a Cumbria representative team to raise funds for the family of Garry Purdham.
The 31-year-old former Whitehaven, Workington Town and Egremont player was one of 12 people killed by gunman Derrick Bird in Cumbria earlier this month, a tragedy which will have lifelong consequences for his wife Ros and their two young children, Flynn and Cameron.
To help the Purdhams, England will play a select team of professional and community players from the county at Whitehaven’s Recreation Ground on Sunday October 3.
The match takes place the day after the Engage Super League Grand Final and will comprise members of the England squad who are preparing to fly out for New Zealand and Australia three days later to compete in the 2010 Four Nations.
“The events of a fortnight ago were a tragedy of incomprehensible proportions which afflicted a region where Rugby League is an intrinsic part of the community,” said RFL Chief Executive Nigel Wood.
“Few of us can imagine what the Purdham family have gone through since they lost Garry but everyone within Rugby League wants to do the right thing by them and this game will achieve just that.
“As soon as the idea was suggested to Steve McNamara he was all for it. I am sure his reaction is going to be reflected in massive interest in this game, both in Cumbria and across the country.”
Although players involved in the Grand Final will not be available for selection, England coach Steve McNamara’s team will be the strongest line-up seen in Cumbria for generations.
A 24-man England squad is scheduled to fly to Auckland on Wednesday June and McNamara believes all the players who miss out on an Engage Super League Grand Final appearance will be hoping to board the plane with bumps and bruises from The Recreation Ground.
“All the Super League players knew of Garry from playing with or against his brother Rob, the Harlequins RL captain, and I’m sure they will want to put on a good show on October 3,” said McNamara.
“As well as helping raise a lot of money for the family, the match will be a useful exercise in our preparations for the Four Nations.
“Hopefully as many people as possible will get behind this match: I can’t think of a more worthy cause.”
Further details of selection plans, coaching arrangements and other logistical aspects of the game will be finalised in the coming months following consultation between the RFL and an organising committee comprising the clubs Garry Purdham played for and the Purdham family.
