In a scrappy first 15 minutes of the game the ball was turned over several times by both teams.  Peterlee scored the first points when hooker Stuart Houghton scored out wide after 16 minutes.  Paul Moss converted the kick.  Jarrow hit back under the posts when hooker Phil Wall scooted over from dummy half.  Bruce Parker converted to tie the score.  Wall went over again from dummy half and Parker converted again to give Vikings a 6 point lead.  Pumas Craig Gilmore took an offload from Luke Watson in front of the posts and crashed over.  Moss scored the kick again and the score was tied once more on the 28 minute mark.  Adam Howard gave the Pumas the lead again when he received the ball after some excellent interplay from Peterlee.  Moss kept his 100% kicking record.  Peterlee’s Houghton scored his second try of the day after breaking the home team’s defence on half way.  He had to use impressive footwork to get around two more defenders before sprinting to the try line to touch the ball down.  Moss kicked the two points again giving Peterlee a 12 point lead at half time.

Jarrow hit back straight after the break after another Pumas penalty.  Parker converted.  Puma’s Carl Brown went under the posts next and Moss converted once again to give Peterlee 30 points.  Full back Scott Jordan chipped the Jarrow cover from 30 metres out and recovered the ball to cross on the line on the right hand side of the pitch.  Moss added the extras.  A 5TH tackle bomb by Jarrow was caught by Jordan who then got to the try line, diving over to score.  Moss still kept his impeccable kicking record for the day by scoring the extra two points.  With 8 minutes to go Jarrow wan a scrum 10 metres out and managed to score and Parker kicked the conversion.  Jarrow scored a controversial try in the corner where the try scorer seemed to be in touch from the angle Peterlee had.  However, the official gave the try but the kick was unsuccessful.  With minutes left on the clock Pumas shifted the ball wide then back inside for the on rushing full back Scott Jordan to receive and score his hat trick.  This made the final score Jarrow Vikings 28 Peterlee Pumas 48.

England RL to play Cumbria in memorial match

England RL to play Cumbria in memorial match

England Rugby League are to play a commemorative match against a Cumbria representative team to raise funds for the family of Garry Purdham.
The 31-year-old former Whitehaven, Workington Town and Egremont player was one of 12 people killed by gunman Derrick Bird in Cumbria earlier this month, a tragedy which will have lifelong consequences for his wife Ros and their two young children, Flynn and Cameron.
To help the Purdhams, England will play a select team of professional and community players from the county at Whitehaven’s Recreation Ground on Sunday October 3.
The match takes place the day after the Engage Super League Grand Final and will comprise members of the England squad who are preparing to fly out for New Zealand and Australia three days later to compete in the 2010 Four Nations.
“The events of a fortnight ago were a tragedy of incomprehensible proportions which afflicted a region where Rugby League is an intrinsic part of the community,” said RFL Chief Executive Nigel Wood.
“Few of us can imagine what the Purdham family have gone through since they lost Garry but everyone within Rugby League wants to do the right thing by them and this game will achieve just that.
“As soon as the idea was suggested to Steve McNamara he was all for it. I am sure his reaction is going to be reflected in massive interest in this game, both in Cumbria and across the country.”
Although players involved in the Grand Final will not be available for selection, England coach Steve McNamara’s team will be the strongest line-up seen in Cumbria for generations.
A 24-man England squad is scheduled to fly to Auckland on Wednesday June and McNamara believes all the players who miss out on an Engage Super League Grand Final appearance will be hoping to board the plane with bumps and bruises from The Recreation Ground.
“All the Super League players knew of Garry from playing with or against his brother Rob, the Harlequins RL captain, and I’m sure they will want to put on a good show on October 3,” said McNamara.
“As well as helping raise a lot of money for the family, the match will be a useful exercise in our preparations for the Four Nations.
“Hopefully as many people as possible will get behind this match: I can’t think of a more worthy cause.”
Further details of selection plans, coaching arrangements and other logistical aspects of the game will be finalised in the coming months following consultation between the RFL and an organising committee comprising the clubs Garry Purdham played for and the Purdham family.

COMMUNITY BOARD STATEMENT
Community Board statement on the season structure

The Rugby League Community Board has unanimously accepted the findings of a formal consultation and report on a possible change to the community game season structure.

The Community Board has agreed that it indicated a clear desire to work towards a March-November season and structure for the bulk of the community game.

Richard Lewis, Community Board Chairman said: “This is a significant step forward for the sport.

“The Community Board has reviewed the findings of the formal consultation which indicated strong preference for a March-November season in particular from the players involved in the winter game.

“This is an exciting opportunity for Rugby League and we will now move forward to the next stage of a fully integrated playing structure within our sport.”

The consultation involved both a telephone survey of players currently playing in the winter months and an online survey across the whole community game. The surveys were conducted by Vision Twentyone, a leading independent research company using recognised industry standards.

The Community Board accepts that some leagues will continue to play during the winter months and also that there are a number of detailed issues to work through.

These issues will be addressed as part of an ongoing consultation process and there will be a series of formal presentations to leagues and associations on the proposed structures over the next few months.

The Community Board will reconvene on July 16 to approve a timetable and action plan on how a March-November competition structure and framework could be implemented by 2012 at the earliest.
