PUMAS DO DOUBLE OVER POOL

Hartlepool 24 - Peterlee Pumas 64 The Pumas travelled to Pool missing several players through injury and work commitments from the previous weeks disappointing defeat at home to league leaders Jarrow. However, Peterlees squad is now stronger in depth than ever before with the clubs junior policy starting to bear fruit and it was one of the Pumas 16 year olds who opened the scoring out wide. Peterlee had recovered the ball from the kick off and the set ended with a shift wide to Dan Alvey, the teenage winger making his starting debut. Further tries from standoff Luke Watson and teenagers Stu Houghton and James Clarke plus his 3 conversions over the next 10 minutes gave the impression that a rout was on the cards. But give Hartlepool credit as they rallied and were able to capitalise on lack of discipline from the Pumas with 2 tries on the 20th and 30th minutes, both of which were converted. Watson replied with a chip ahead from the 40m line which he recovered and crossed again. Clarke added the 2 but Pool had the last word in the half with another close range effort to make the half time score 28-14 to the Pumas. 10 minutes into the 2nd half Hartlepool struck again to pull the points deficit back to just 8 points but then Peterlee found another gear and started running in tries at a rate of roughly a try every 5 minutes. The scorers being Clarke, Houghton, Leigh Wheatley, Jim Dickinson, Carl Brown and finally Clarke again to get his hat trick to compliment his ten conversions. The home team had the final say with back to back sets camped on the Pumas line finishing the game off with a good try in the corner. Final score Hartlepool 24 Peterlee Pumas 64.

PUMAS 18 JARROW 44

Referee ruins what could have been one of the best games of the season In what was arguably the pick of todays north east conference fixtures 1st place Jarrow took on Peterlee Pumas who were directly below them in 2nd. Although Peterlee started well and pressured Jarrow the away team was the first to strike crossing after what Pumas thought was some controversial refereeeing decisions. The try was also converted to add to Peterlees frustration. Jarrow hit again from the kick off capitalizing on some loose tackling from the Pumas. The try went unconverted. Peterlees Richard Foster scored for the Pumas under the sticks and Paul Flynn converted to relieve the score slightly. Prop Richard Thirkell broke Puma rules by diving over at dummy half to equalize and Flynn added the extras for the lead to change to the Pumas. Jarrow scored again with a try right under the posts which gave an easy conversion to them. The Vikings raided the Pumas defence again in the dying minutes of the first half when they scored from the scrum following several more frustrating refereeing decsisions that had the pumas concentration disrupted continually. The second half started with the match referee piggy backing the Vikings deep into Pumas territory and it granted them the position to score under the posts again. Again the Vikings scored the extra points on offer. Pumas loose forward Watson chipped ahead on the half way line, collected his kick and cantered over to score. Flynn converted. Jarrow made sure of the match after Peterlee had knocked on deep in their own half. The Vikings added more points to their tally after a shift wide caught the Pumas out. Three more tries from Jarrow, two of which were converted, in the last few minutes of the game ss their chance to go top of the league was taken away from them as the referee blew the final whistle, his best decision of the game.

Winlation 2 Peterlee Pumas 88

Peterlees winning ways continued against Winlaton in a one sided score line, although Winlaton had some being awarded two penalty scored. 16 year old hooker Stu Houghton dancing over the line. Loose forward Luke Watson converted to give Pumas a 4 point lead. The Pumas returned the home teams half from the kick off and 18 year old stand off James Clarke crossed and Watson converted again increasing their lead to 10 points. Pumas Winger John Steel tried to dive over from dummy half but knocked the ball on in the 4th phase of the set. Winlaton put some good pressure on the Pumas defensive line but could not seem to breach it. Peterlee put pressure on the home team in the Pumas half forcing a mistake from the Warriors. A wide pass was intercepted by 16 year old Liam McIvor, making his debut, who ran 40 metres to score. Winger Richard Foster was subbed on for Peterlee and ran from the half way line to cross in the corner after breaking several tackles. Watsons kick went over for the extras. Clarke, who had now switched to centre for Peterlee was next to cross the line with Watson again kicking the extras. Luke Watson broke next for the Pumas, after breaking on the halfway line he crossed under the posts to give himself the best possible position for converting the try, which he did. Another 16 year old, stand off Zac McCluskey, went under the posts for the Pumas last try of the half after Foster had ran 60 metres and passed to McCluskey who was in support. Watson converted once more to make the half time score 2-38. decent attacks which the Pumas dealt with convincingly. The game also reinforced the fact that Peterlees younger players definitely belong in the side with eight of the Pumas tries being scored by players under the age of 20. Winlaton started the game with a short kick off. And forced a penalty from Peterlee which they chose to kick and put the first 2 points on the board. Peterlee took a few minutes to get going but after

Winlaton started the second half with some good pressure and had several chances to cross the Pumas line but Peterlee kept them out and forced a knock on. Watson broke from the scrum and the Pumas got a roll on in the next two tackles which resulted in 19 year old second rower Andrew Rollins crossing the line. Watson scored the extra two points. Prop Richie Thirkell got on the end of the next set to cross over on the right but Clarke missed the conversion. Watson broke again from midfield and went under the posts for the Pumas. Rollins scored his second try next for the Pumas after Stu Houghton offloaded in a tackle to Thirkell who in turn offloaded to Rollins. Clarke converted the kick. Richard Foster returned to the pitch once again, this time at loose forward, and broke from the base of the scrum from 50 metres out and ran in his second try. Clarke converted. Zac McCluskey chipped into the home teams dead ball zone and the resulting chase led to a drop out by the Warriors. 16 year old Dan Alvey ran 40 metres and was held up just short but won a penalty in the process to maintain the pressure. Rollins crashed over from the tap restart. Watson returned to convert the try. Fullback Leigh Wheatley was the next Puma to score with prop Thirkell kicking the two points. Stand off McCluskey scored his second of the game after a good passing move wide. Watson kicked again and scored the extras. Winlatons last kick off didnt go the required 10 metres and, after a quick tap and quick passing hands, prop Jim Dickinson score the last try of the game. Watson kicked the final conversion and made the final score 2-88 as the final whistle blew. Next game for Pumas 20th June at home to league leaders Jarrow Vikings.

Games at Wallsend Saturday 30th May.

A full day up at the Benfield Sports Center with the Pumas under 12's and under 14's taking on Wallsend Eagles and the day finishing off with the Open Age team taking on Newcastle Knights.

Both junior teams suffered from missing players due to the half term holidays but both aquitted themselves really well.

Massive improvement from the Pumas under 12s, a lot of heart shown, missed out in the end by 6 tries to  3  but still a lot to build on with most of the team playing up a year they are performing really well.

Under 14s started off shaky with an enthusiastic home team giving it all they had but got on top in the end and ran out comfortable winners, i think it was 14-54 at the end

Newcastle Knights 24 Peterlee Pumas 20

A game which was anticipated as being a very close did not disappoint.  Both teams battled for the lead throughout the game in a very competitive match.

Newcastle opened the scoring after ten minutes, a chip and chase over Pumas defence from 30 metres out and a try was scored with the conversion being made. The Pumas built pressure and hit back through winger Matt Storey on the left but the difficult conversion was missed. Peterlee had a try disallowed out wide in the corner before Newcastle broke 60 metres but knocked on. 2 penalties piggybacked Newcastle up the field and they crossed in the corner with the extra two points being missed. Half Time Newcastle 10 Peterlee 4.

Pumas Luke Watson broke from half way and crossed under the posts adding the extras after the break levelling the score at 10 points each. 18 year old debutant Michael McDougall crossed next for Pumas and Watson converted.  Newcastle recovered possession from the kick off and hit back in the corner but missed the conversion 14 16.  Newcastle broke on half way and although the cover defence stopped the attack 5 metres short of the try line they hit back on the right corner and although missed the conversion they took a two point lead.  Another 2 penalties marched the Pumas back to their line and Newcastle crossed and converted. Next, Peterlee winger John Dixon crossed over the line in the corner.  Pumas had another try disallowed in the dying seconds of the game which would have seen the level the score again with the kick to go but it wasnt to be.  Full Time Newcastle 24 Peterlee 20.

Mens next game home to Northallerton.

R&R Peterlee Pumas 48 Hartlepool 8

PostPosted: Sat May 16, 2009 8:56 pm    Post subject: Hartlepool at home Saturday 16th May Reply with quote Edit/Delete this post Delete this post

A strong Pumas team played the newly formed Hartlepool side in what was a physical match.

Hartlepool put the first points on the board after a penalty against Peterlee was kicked by James Mashedar. After a lot of tough tackling by both sides winger Matthew Storey went over to make it 4-2. Minutes later a quick shift from right to left found Storey going over in the corner. The next try came after Hartlepool asked for a knock on which the referee didn't give and Paul James barged over and Paul Flynn scored the conversion making it 14-2. Luke Watson took a kick on his own 30m line and ran almost 40m and then passed to Lewis Humble who scored, Flynn added the extras to make it 20-2. Hartlepool replied through Sam Williams which Mashedar converted. Half time 20-8.

The start of the second half saw Storey score his hat trick. Jim Dickinson scored a few minutes after which Flynn converted. A smart move from the Pumas gave Zac Mcluskey his chance to score after Luke Watson held a defender up and passed to him. Flynn kicked the extras. Richard Thirkell scored for Pumas next, barging over under the posts. The referee stopped to take a second look and gave the try. Flynn again kicked it. Mike Donkin was disallowed a try by the referee in the corner which could have seen the Pumas make the 50 points mark.

Peterlee man of the match Luke Watson.

Hartlepool man of the match Will Turnbull.
